Perhaps the error is mine, but I've moved up to DT 1.4 and my tasks are missing from my desktop list. The due dates are there, but not the tasks themselves. The dates and the tasks do occur in the taskbar, but not on the desktop.

Have you changed the font of the items? maybe the item text is transparent as well.

I would advise uninstalling your current version and install it again.

let me know if after installing the items text is visible.
